Affecting 24 million Americans over the age of 40, cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss in the United States. It makes sense, then, that Prevent Blindness America has designated the entire month of June as Cataract Awareness Month. The objective is to encourage eye-care/healthcare providers, as well as other eye-disease and blindness prevention organizations to join together in increasing the community’s knowledge about cataracts.
What many don’t realize is that, despite its prevalence, cataracts are surprisingly easy to treat. In fact, the entire surgery lasts about 20 minutes, and most people resume normal activities fairly quickly. Additionally, while there is no one proven way to prevent age-related cataracts, there are healthy lifestyle choices that can slow the progression of the disease.
In support of Cataract Awareness Month, here are some brands that will make a donation to the blindness prevention charity of your choice when you purchase online.
