In 1984, President Ronald Reagan issued a presidential proclamation designating the last week of June as “Helen Keller Deaf-Blind Awareness Week.” Every year since, the Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths & Adults (HKNC) celebrates the week with a national advocacy campaign recognizing the achievements and capabilities of people who are deaf-blind.
This year, the Helen Keller Deaf-Blind Awareness Week is from June 25 to July 1, 2017. The theme is the power of touch.
While communication technology for the deaf and blind has evolved dramatically over the last 50 years, the deaf-blind community recognizes that it’s important to know when to put down the technology and connect through the power of touch. In a world so focused on digital communication, we can sometimes forget what the deaf-blind community still holds as most important when it comes to building relationships – the best connection is the human connection.
