Special Days Camps - Until there is a cure

At Special Days we say "until there is a cure, there is camp". After 43+ years of camp we have gotten to see some remarkable strides in pediatric cancer treatment. More kids are cured today, more kids get to keep their limbs, more kids go on to live full, rich lives... they get married and have families of their own. But still not all do and for those that do make it, for those that are cured, the journey is long and difficult. And it hits the entire family hard. Camp is an opportunity to connect with "your people". It might be your bunkmate that knows what it is like to lose your hair when you are getting ready for prom. Or another camper that tells you he was mad at his sister for being sick because now his mom has to be at the hospital and can't come to his basketball game. At camp your people are all around you. They are your cabin mates, your counselor, might even be your doctor or nurse in the med center. To be with someone that gets it. Over 85% of our volunteer staff are former campers. They want to give back to those that were there for them. Generous donations make this all possible. The campfires, the hikes in the woods, the singing, the human water curling competition (really, take a look at the website-www.specialdays.org), the camp food, the first crush. yup... even the first crush... because that is what camp is all about, being normal. experiencing life.
